Venaseal™ vs. ClosureFast™: Which Vein Treatment Lasts Longer?

For patients struggling with painful, bulging, or unsightly varicose veins, modern vein treatments offer safe, effective, and minimally invasive options. Two of the most widely used procedures are Venaseal™ and ClosureFast™. Both eliminate problem veins to restore healthy circulation.
At Advanced Heart & Vascular Associates, Nader Chadda, MD, FACC, FSCAI, has performed thousands of vascular procedures with exceptional results. When you visit our clinic, you can expect to receive individualized treatment.
Here we take a closer look at Venaseal and ClosureFast, how they work, how long results last, and which may be the better solution for treating your varicose veins.
How each treatment works
Venaseal uses a special medical adhesive to seal problem veins. Once the vein is closed off, blood naturally reroutes to healthier veins. Because no heat is used, there’s no need for the multiple numbing injections that other methods often require.
ClosureFast is a type of radiofrequency ablation that uses gentle, controlled heat to collapse the diseased vein. A thin catheter delivers energy that causes the veins to shrink and seal. This approach has been used successfully for over 15 years and is supported by research.
Both treatments are done on an outpatient basis, take less than an hour, and allow you to return to normal activities quickly.
Durability and long-term results
When it comes to durability, it’s important to look at both clinical studies and real-world results.
ClosureFast shows a high rate of success even five years after treatment. Because the treated vein is destroyed and absorbed by the body, the closure is permanent in most cases. Recurrence is usually due to new veins developing disease, not the treated vein reopening.
One Venaseal study showed closure rates above 94% at three years, with promising durability beyond that. As a newer technology, Venaseal doesn’t have as much long-term data as ClosureFast.
Medtronic, the maker of Venaseal, released results of a study reporting a 94% closure rate at 5 years. Other studies of the procedure say compression stockings need to be worn after it.
In short, both treatments are highly effective in the long run. ClosureFast has the advantage of decades of follow-up data, while Venaseal offers similar durability with added patient comfort during and after the procedure.
Which is right for you?
A comprehensive evaluation plays a key role in choosing the most appropriate treatment option for your situation.
Venaseal may be ideal if you prefer fewer needle sticks, want to avoid compression stockings, or have a lifestyle that makes immediate return to activity important.
ClosureFast may be ideal if you want a time-tested option with robust long-term results and don’t mind wearing compression stockings briefly after the procedure.
At Advanced Heart & Vascular Associates, Dr. Chadda evaluates vein structure, overall health, and lifestyle factors before recommending the most effective and lasting treatment.
