What Your Vascular Ultrasound Actually Shows

What Your Vascular Ultrasound Actually Shows

How well blood moves through your blood vessels plays a critical role in your overall health. This makes taking care of your cardiovascular health a top priority. Currently, heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, and plaque buildup that narrows and stiffens arteries is a common culprit.

A vascular ultrasound uses sound wave technology to check the health of your arteries and veins. When blood vessels are healthy, they’re flexible and wide enough for blood to flow freely through them.

If you have a condition that impacts your cardiovascular health, a vascular ultrasound can help you get much needed answers and appropriate treatment options. In addition to conducting an ultrasound, our team can help you eliminate or mitigate risk factors that contribute to cardiovascular disease.

Advanced Heart and Vascular Associates is a premier practice devoted to helping patients keep their hearts strong and blood vessels healthy. Skilled vascular specialist Nader Chadda, MD, and the rest of our team work with patients to identify and manage a full range of issues influencing cardiovascular health.

What does a vascular ultrasound look for?

A vascular ultrasound checks the health of your cardiovascular system. Different types of ultrasounds look at various aspects of your blood vessel health in different body areas:

Carotid ultrasound

This evaluates the carotid arteries in the neck. The arteries play a crucial role in supplying blood to the brain. This type of ultrasound helps detect plaque buildup that could increase your risk of stroke.

Abdominal aortic ultrasound

The aorta is your body’s largest artery, and it runs upward from the heart, forms an arch and extends downward through the abdominal cavity. The abdominal aorta carries blood from your heart to your lower body. An ultrasound of this artery checks for aneurysms (weakened, bulging areas).

Venous doppler ultrasound

This focuses on veins, particularly in the legs, and is designed to detect blood clots in deep veins (deep vein thrombosis) or chronic venous insufficiency.

Peripheral arterial ultrasound

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is the abnormal narrowing of blood vessels in the arms or legs. A peripheral arterial ultrasound examines blood flow in the arms or legs to identify narrowing or blockages associated with PAD.

Monitoring existing vascular conditions

If you’ve already been diagnosed with a vascular condition, such as PAD, carotid artery disease, or an aneurysm, regular ultrasounds are key to tracking your progress.

Dr. Chadda often uses vascular ultrasound to monitor how well treatments are working or to ensure that repaired arteries and veins remain open. This continuous monitoring helps to prevent complications through early intervention.

A personalized roadmap to better heart and vascular health

With advanced imaging and extensive experience, Dr. Chadda uses each ultrasound as a guide to develop individualized care plans aimed at reducing your risks and optimizing long-term vascular health.

Vascular ultrasounds give you a clear picture of your circulatory health, including early signs of disease, so that you can protect your heart, brain, and overall well-being.
